PEMARRO and Stepping Stone Form Strategic Alliance

PEMARRO and Stepping Stone Form Strategic Alliance

The Boards of Directors of Pemarro and Stepping Stone of San Diego are excited to announce a strategic alliance that will relaunch the Ramona, CA-based treatment facility. The effort will build on the strengths of the two organizations, that will create a synergy that reinvigorates, extends and strengthens the Pemarro brand.

Pemarro is a 10-bed treatment facility formed in 1984 by visionary community leaders that saw a need for an affordable, nonprofit, long-term treatment approach that would respond to the special needs of people with co-occurring disorders (addiction plus a mental health challenge) as well as the "reluctant to recover" (individuals prone to relapse).

In the years that followed hundreds of "students" and their families found long term recovery through Pemarro utilizing a blend of state-of-the-art, evidence-based treatment. Pemarro enjoyed a reputation among the treatment community as the program for those with a history of multiple relapses.

More recently, the Pemarro board realized that a small, stand alone facility would be increasingly challenged by economic realities and the nation's move to reform the health care system. Board President, Willis M. Allen, Jr. could see the handwriting on the wall. "We knew that there were changes occurring in the larger environment that we could not control. Creating a partnership with an organization of Stepping Stone's caliber was our way to create a hedge against future challenges."

After several months of study and deliberation the Pemarro directors chose Stepping Stone of San Diego (SSSD) as their strategic partner. Celebrating its 35th year of continuous operation SSSD was a logical choice because of its strong national brand and reputation for innovative addiction treatment and recovery services. Long supported by contracts with the San Diego County Department of Health Services to provide care for low income and indigent citizens, SSSD, a nonprofit corporation, had recently inaugurated a program for moderate income clients who could afford to pay for services.

SSSD Board Chair Tom Reise expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. "These two organizations have been helping San Diegans recover from addictive disease for a combined total of almost 60 years. We are delighted that we at Stepping Stone will be partnering with Pemarro to continue this important work. The synergy we can achieve through collaboration will strengthen and extend our respective capacities"

John de Miranda, Ed.M., LAADC, President and CEO of Stepping Stone will assume the same position at Pemarro on an interim basis. He holds an advanced degree from Harvard University and is a person in long term recovery with more than 35 years of service in the alcohol and drug problems field.

3rd Annual Mission Bay Cruise on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011
Bruce Vilanch

Live It Up with Bruce Vilanch at Stepping Stone's
Third Annual Mission Bay Cruise on Sunday October 2nd, 2011

One of San Diego's most anticipated charity events is just weeks away: Stepping Stone's third annual Mission Bay Cruise, co-hosted by none other than six-time Emmy Award winner Bruce Vilanch. This year's gala cruise on Sunday, Oct. 2nd, promises to appeal to everybody's taste buds.

Expect an extraordinary evening of mingling, dining, and entertainment onboard the exquisite "gem of the bay," the William D. Evans sternwheeler. Proceeds go to Stepping Stone's exemplary alcohol/drug recovery and HIV/AIDS services as well as to the agency's campaign for a women's sober living program.

"The Board of Directors of Stepping Stone are thrilled that Mr. Vilanch has agreed to join us on our third Mission Bay Cruise. After writing for the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys and Tonys for years, he has proven to be one of the funniest people in Hollywood. Come enjoy a memorable evening and help us celebrate Stepping Stone's 35th Anniversary," said Tom Reise, Board Chairperson.

VIP guests will be invited to a Meet N' Greet with Bruce Vilanch on the 3rd floor deck. One of the entertainment industry's most sought after jokesmiths, Vilanch is most widely recognized as the Emmy-winning writer of 21 Oscar broadcasts, and multiple Emmy, Tony, and Grammy broadcasts. He has written material for Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O'Donnell, and Paul Reiser to name a few, and has also written scripts for multiple one-person shows, musicals, and concert specials.

Known for his eclectic eyewear and collection of unique T-shirts, he began as a child model for Lane Bryant, but when his initial efforts as an actor came to naught, he became an entertainment writer for the Chicago Tribune instead. Impressed by his review of her cabaret performance in 1970, Bette Midler hired him to punch up her act where he gave birth to Midler's famed Sophie Tucker jokes. He later moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for variety shows like the original "Donny and Marie" and "The Brady Bunch Hour" (both ABC) and provided material for Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers.

A special after dinner show will keep you laughing into the week. What else to expect on the cruise? A delicious four-course dinner under the 2nd floor masterpiece of a 50,000-piece stained glass dome. A composite of many actual steamboats that plied America's rivers in the 19th century, the 100-foot-long William D. Evans was launched in 1986 as a loving tribute to that era's most elegant mode of transportation. From the three hand-crafted wooden masts at her bow, to the twelve ton paddlewheel at her stern, the boat recalls in smallest detail a colorful period of American history typified by graceful living. Skimming the blue-green waters of Mission Bay, the William D. Evans presents the perfect setting for Stepping Stone's 2011 gala.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of this leading non-profit organization. Meet distinguished recovery ambassadors, community leaders, elected officials, trustees, and the larger "Stepping Stone community." Guests will enjoy a multi media exhibit chronicling the history of Stepping Stone, from the days when LGBT addiction treatment was non-existent to modern day practices, activism, and success.

Boarding is at 4:00 pm, the reception with Bruce Vilanch at 4:15 pm (VIP Guests bypass the line); Dinner will be served at 5:45 pm, and Live it Up with Bruce Vilanch starts at 6:30 pm, to be proceeded by a live auction. The belly of the boat will also feature live DJ music, a dance floor, and a silent auction featuring high end items.

VIP Tickets are $125, regular tickets $75 per person. Table captions save $50 on their table for 10, not including VIP upgrade.

Boarding passes can be purchased at steppingstonesd.org/events.html and at Stepping Stone's administrative office at 3767 Central Ave., San Diego, CA 92105.

Stepping Stone Honors Military Personnel at Memorial Day Flag Ceremony
Benny Cartwright

Veterans will raise a flag that returned from Afghanistan war zone

In recognition of the brave men and women in our community and around the world who answered our country's call in its time of need, Stepping Stone will pay tribute to these heroes with a special Memorial Day flag ceremony on May 30.

The event will begin at 9 am in Grand Central, the great room at Stepping Stone's treatment facility, located at 3767 Central Ave. in San Diego, CA 92105. Midshipman Faille, USN, and other veterans in recovery will then raise a U.S. flag briskly to the top of the staff, and then solemnly lower it to the half-staff position, where it will remain until noon. This flag was dedicated to Stepping Stone by a serviceman who brought it with him from the war zone in Afghanistan. During the post of the colors, the national anthem will be played, and everyone present will pledge allegiance.

The half-staff position pays tribute to the more than a million men and women worldwide who gave their lives in service of their country. From noon until sunset the flag will be at full-staff honoring those who are currently serving in the armed services.

Friends of Stepping Stone who are veterans will retire the colors at 7:50 pm (sunset) and then walk it at a quiet, reverent pace into Grand Central, where the flag will be laid in state. In addition to the Memorial Day ceremony, the colors will be incased and officially dedicated to Stepping Stone. It will be on permanent display in the great room as a token of appreciation for the brave women and men who have selflessly served and continue to serve the nation.

"We are grateful for the sacrifices made by those who risk their health and their lives for the sake of liberty and justice for all. This ceremony pays tribute to these service women and men," said John deMiranda, President and CEO of Stepping Stone.

Kristen Kavanaugh, who is a clinical social work intern at Stepping Stone, recently co-founded with graduate students and faculty at the University of Southern California's School of Social Work the Military Acceptance Project (MAP), a non-profit organization for the purpose of promoting social justice, equality, and fair treatment for all service members. The founders of MAP are former service members, combat veterans, military family members, and active supporters of the military. They share a dedication to the military and a passion for community service and helping others.

The organization's vehicle is its website, militaryacceptanceproject.org. The site is dedicated to serve as a conduit for communication between service members and military leadership, provide resources and information to those coming to terms with open service post-repeal, support and connect lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) service members, and anonymously collect and share information through polls, forums, and focus groups.

Stepping Stone's Sober Living Program Expands

Stepping Stone's Sober Living Program Expands

Stepping Stone of San Diego operates a nationally recognized 31-bed treatment facility primarily designed to assist individuals identifying lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) who suffer from alcohol or drug addiction. The agency offers a 6-month residential program, after care, HIV/AIDS support services, and transitional living. This month Stepping Stone announced the grand opening of its new sober living home in the College area of San Diego.

"The home is in excellent condition and we are thankful to the folks at Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) who have made the increased funding available. At this site we will also offer slots to Native Americans under the California American Indian Recovery program as well as a few residents who pay their own way," said John deMiranda, President and CEO.

The newly added transitional housing program offers 11 units that surround a manicured courtyard. Participants must have a minimum of 60 days clean time, completed a Residential or Outpatient Treatment Program, and a commitment to long term recovery. Stepping Stone holds house meetings once a week and participants must submit meeting slips and monthly progress report at the end of the month. All participants must be working full time or part time and/or going to school as well doing some type of volunteer work.

"Stepping Stone's sober living program provides a continuum of care for individuals who are transitioning into independent living after treatment," said Catherine Aquino, Director of Support Services.

This house is the second sober living home in addition to Hillcrest's Enya House, which was named for the vocalist (who gave her permission) because her songs were gentle and soothing. At this time, Stepping Stone would like to invite individuals to consider a naming opportunity. Would you like to honor someone special to you by supporting the new home? Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc. Celebrates 35th Anniversary
Celebrating 35 years

Celebrating 35th years of community service

In 2010 Stepping Stone celebrated the 10th Anniversary of its state-of-the-art alcohol and drug treatment facility. This year, Stepping Stone has reached yet another milestone: June marks the 35th Anniversary of the agency's founding.

To celebrate this milestone with the recovery community of San Diego and its supporters, Stepping Stone presents two special events: An Open House and Proclamation Ceremony on Friday, June 3, from 3 – 5 pm at the facility located at 3767 Central Ave., San Diego, CA 92105, and on June 4 Live It Up, an outdoor extravaganza featuring a car show, a fashion show, an archival exhibit, and food. Live It Up is hosted at Board Chairperson Tom Reise's estate at 3596 Sydney Pl., San Diego, CA 92116, from 2 – 6 pm.

"In the few months that I have been involved with Stepping Stone through service on the Board of Directors, I have learned what a truly life-changing, special organization it is. For 35 years, the organization has quietly been serving members of our community who are at a time in their life of greatest need, and it is so important that all of us give a little bit back - in some way, Stepping Stone has touched us all, be it personally or by saving the life of a friend or loved one," said Benny Cartwright, member of the Board of Directors.

"We have pulled out all the stops for the Live It Up Garden Party, and it will be an event that all will enjoy! With a fashion show, sexy models, entertainment, and gourmet food in a gorgeous setting, participants are certain to have a great time - this will be a party like no other! By supporting Stepping Stone you are supporting our friends and loved ones in recovery, and truly, supporting the community. Please join us!"

Stepping Stone has come a long way since it its modest beginnings in 1976. The founding group opened the first residential treatment center in 1979 in the Golden Hill neighborhood of San Diego, then moved it to (the current location on) Central Ave in City Heights. During her 17 year tenure as administrator and later executive director, Cheryl Houk successfully expanded Stepping Stone's treatment and outreach services tailored toward the unique needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Her fundraising efforts culminated in a capitol campaign for a state-of-the-art treatment facility that opened in 2000. Eleven years later, Stepping Stone is nationally recognized for its innovative client-oriented service and superior evidence-based treatment approach.

"During the 35 years of Stepping Stone's existence thousands of people have been positively affected by our services. As our logo states, we are about the business of 'saving lives' one day at a time," said John deMiranda, President and CEO of Stepping Stone.

"The celebrations this year are an opportunity for any and all of those clients, family members and friends, as well as former board members and employees to step up and reconnect with this important community institution. Stepping Stone started as an idea that LGBT people were entitled to the best addiction treatment services available. That idea still guides our work today, 35 years later."

Stepping Stone operates a beautiful treatment facility that delivers superior treatment to those affected by addiction, co-occurring disorders, and/or HIV/AIDS. Individuals seeking help find it at The Stone. The 6 –month program employs a social model, which incorporates one-on-one therapy as well as group work and self-advocacy.

The current environment creates significant challenges for non-profit organizations. Despite these tribulations, which include significant state and county budget cuts, Stepping Stone of San Diego, Inc. has continued to deliver high quality and affordable drug and alcohol services. In conjunction with the 35th Anniversary of its founding, the agency's goal is to promote alcohol and drug recovery, celebrate "life," and raise $80,000 for Stepping Stone's recovery and HIV/AIDS support services.

Live It Up is sponsored by Mahogany Run Delivery, the Imperial Court de San Diego, MSE Landscaping Professionals, Bridges, Bill Hardt Presents, House Boi, Rich's, The Cottages, Vons, Gay San Diego, GSDBA, SDGLN, SDPix, Lavender Lens, US Foods, Ortiz Engineering Contractors, The Corvette Shop, Great Autos of Yesteryear, Gossip Grill, San Diego LGBT Pride, and Raw Images.

Tickets for Live It Up are $25 and can be purchased at steppingstonesd.org/events.html in advance, at the administrative office at 3767 Central Ave., San Diego, CA 92105, or at the door. Stepping Stone of San Diego Releases Short Film
Featuring National Spokesperson Emmy Award Winner Leslie Jordan

This month Stepping Stone's official short film, "Give," launched on the new website, steppingstonesd.org, and on YouTube. In the 8-minute public service film, Emmy Award winning actor and comedian Leslie Jordan speaks about his own recovery and the importance of alcohol and drug treatment services specifically tailored toward the unique needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning individuals.

"I'm involved with Stepping Stone because I myself am in recovery. I know that a lot of gay and lesbian people deal with the shame of growing up gay by immersing themselves in drugs and alcohol. Stepping Stone is always there for them. That's the main reason I never say no to Stepping Stone," said National spokesperson for Stepping Stone, Leslie Jordan, in a recent interview.

Currently touring with his new show, "Deck Them Halls Y'All!," Leslie Jordan will stop in San Diego for two exclusive engagements at Diversionary Theatre on Saturday, November 27, and on Sunday, November 28, and then return to Southern California for four shows at Los Angeles' Renberg Theatre from December 16-19.

Leslie Jordan is the 2006 Emmy Award Winner for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his delicious portrayal of "Beverley Leslie" on "Will and Grace." Television audiences will also remember him for his recurring roles on "Privileged," "Ugly Betty," "Boston Legal," and "Reba."

Feature film audiences will recognize Jordan from his performance as "Brother Boy" in Del Shores' adaptation of his play "Sordid Lives'" with Olivia Newton-John, Delta Burke and Beau Bridges. He is reprising the role in the television series based on the play and film for the cable network LOGO. Other upcoming feature film appearances include "Love Ranch" in a captivating scene with Helen Mirren directed by Taylor Hackford.

On stage, Jordan won the Ovation Award, The Garland Award and The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his portrayal of "Preston Leroy," the aging, sodden barfly in Del Shores hit play "Southern Baptist Sissies." Jordan has enjoyed considerable success as a writer. His book My Trip Down the Pink Carpet for Simon and Schuster is currently in bookstores. Material from the book formed the basis of a 90-minute one-man show, which had a successful 45 city book-signing/performance tour in 2008.
